In The Coming of Post-Industrial Society Daniel Bell traced the rise of the Information Society over the last two hundred years. Since reading the book over 25 years ago Neil has been researching all aspects of the Information Society, past, present, and future.

My present research is focused on the foundations of the electric telegraph in the United Kingdom and its relationship to society and is deliberately multi-disciplinary. I have just submitted my doctoral thesis "Constructing the Network Society: Evolution of the Electric Telegraph 1837-1869" in the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies in University College London. This is the first proper examination of the telegraph in this period and is intended to illuminate the present fluid state of the internet and how it might develop. The project is placed within other research being undertaken in The Bartlett on Cities and Regions.
